Learning and knowing are two completely different things!

  • Recognizing or being familiar with something is not the same as having agility/mastery/virtuosity of that thing.
  • Chunking – Break down complex/abstract ideas into tangible/digestible chunks, and link those chunks to vivid images. By creating such visual associations, you’re not just memorizing - you’re understanding. Your mind is a storage system. Learn to catalog efficiently.
  • Don’t try to memorize what you can look up.
    • Memorization/Cramming → Solid Deep Understanding
    • If you found yourself need to memorize something, it’s an indication that you don’t understand that stuff well enough.

How to learn anything?

  1. Deconstruct the skill—decide exactly what you want to be able to do when you’re done (i.e., with the end in mind), and then look into the skill and break it down into smaller pieces.
  2. Learn enough to self-correct—learn just enough that you can actually practice and self-correct or self-edit as you practice. Use only 3-5 resources rather than something like 20 → It’s just a form of procrastination.

      • Only read and consume content until you know what you need to do
      • Then, stop reading and consuming content until what you know you need to do is done

  3. Remove barriers to practice—remove the distractions that are keeping you from practicing.
  4. Practice for at least 20 hours—by pre-committing to practicing whatever it is that you want to do for at least 20 hours, you will be able to overcome initial frustration barrier and stick with the practice long enough to actually reap the rewards.
  5. The major barrier’s not intellectual, it’s emotional.

Principle: Instead of focusing solely on acquiring knowledge, prioritize strategies that help retain information and offset the natural tendencies of forgetting that occur with any new material we just learned.

    • More effective than passive memorization
      1. Taking a topic you wish to learn
      2. Creating questions based on that topic
      3. Repeatedly (not just once, ideally 2-3 times) testing yourself on those questions

    • Active (self-)testing is far better than passive re-reading or re-exposure to the material. Test yourself ASAP with open-ended, short-answer, minimal-prompt questions after the FIRST exposure, to prevent forgetting and consolidate information.

    • Retrieving information from your brain = better for learning

Habits

  • Mental Framing
    • Actively/Voluntarily engage your focus / draw your attention into whatever you are trying to learn
      • Tell yourself the material is important. Use a silent script in your head like “I get to learn this!”
    • Attach learning to an aspirational goal that motivates you, e.g., how your learning will change/impact your life
      • Be specific about what success will look like and why that success is important.
  • Take several brief breaks (with each 5-30 seconds) during study / in the act of consuming/absorbing material, and reflect on the material to reinforce memory
    • Pro Tip: Pause longer after key points to allow the “Gap Effects” to happen
  • Avoid phone immediately after a study session to offset forgetting
  • A good night of restorative sleep BEFORE and AFTER 2 studying/learning is crucial for get the best out of your studying/learning efforts. 3“If you don’t snooze, you lose.” 4
